Minors bow out of the championship

Mullinavat minors' interest in the championship came to an abrupt halt on Sunday when they were comprehensively beaten by St. Martin's. Injuries to John Walsh and Darren Waters really took their toll on the team and our boys were facing an uphill struggle from the start as the loss of these two players really weakened our team. Mullinavat got off to a bright start with a point from Mark Mansfield in the second minute but St. Martin's were soon level and went ahead in the seventh minute when the Mullinavat defence failed to clear a long range free and the ball ended up in the net. Mullinavat responded well to this setback and two more points from Mark Mansfield saw us just a goal behind 1-3 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter. However another mix up saw St. Martin's get another  goal and they began to grow in confidence as our challenge wilted. By half time St. Martin's had stretched their lead to 3-6 to 0-4 and we had a mountain to climb. Although the defence tightened up  in the second half St. Martin's still outscored us by 0-8 to 0-3 to run out easy winners.  Even though this was  a comprehensive defeat the team can still look back on some good displays in the championship , especially in the replay with Clara .
