Under 21 southern final

Mullinavat 3-23 Mooncoin 1-9

Mullinavat under 21 hurlers got the new year off to a great start with an impressive victory against Mooncoin in the Roinn A Southern final today. Leading from start to finish they were much too strong for a gallant Mooncoin side which battled all the way to the end. Although Mullinavat only led by two goals at the half way stage, they pulled away early in the second half and had the match won from a long way out.
By the end of the first quarter Mullinavat led by 1-3 to 0-3. John Walsh got the first point in the second minute and Ian Duggan found the net when Pat Mulhern found him with a good pass in the eighth minute. Mark Mansfield and Simon Aylward added two more points as Mullinavat looked the more dangerous team. The second quarter saw Mullinavat edge further ahead and Liam Fennelly scored the second goal after eighteen minutes when he cleverly flicked the ball to the net following a good pass from John Walsh. The Mullinavat forward line were looking the more dangerous but Mooncoin kept in touch thanks to the excellent free taking of Ethan Ryan. When the half time whistle sounded Mullinavat led by 2-8  to 0-8 having played against the wind so they were looking the likely winners at this stage.
Mullinavat began the second half brightly and Ian Duggan pointed a sideline in the second minute.Pat Mulhern added another and two smashing points from John Walsh saw Mullinavat take a decisive grip on the game.By the tenth minute they had added three more points and looked to be coasting to victory. However a piece of slack defending saw Mooncoin slip in for a goal after eleven minutes. The response was instant however and Liam Fennelly's pass found Ian Duggan who made no mistake and Mullinavat were in control again. The rest of the game was totally dominated by Mullinavat and they added eight points to their tally. Mooncoin still were battling gamely and had the final score when JP Purcell pointed in the final minute.
This was a good all round performance by Mullinavat and they now meet St. Lachtain's of Freshford in the county final.
