Mullinavat 2-21 Rower Inistioge 2-8

The season for the adult club finally got under way last week end when the  junior As took the field against the Rower Inistioge in Mullinavat last Sunday evening.  With the arrival of new time this heralded the beginning of the summer of GAA.  Pat Rohan side was different from the 2010 selection with a nice blend of youth and experience.  In very pleasant conditions for hurling with very little wind the scene was set for a cracking encounter.  Indeed these two teams played one another on numerous occasions last year and each match was closely fought.  Hopefully the 2011 version was going to be as entertaining.
Getting off to a flying start Mullinavat had 3 points on the board from Ger Malone Mark Mansfield and Joe Gahan before the Rower registered.  However the Rower were not long in pegging back the deficit as they got a goal and a point to put them into the lead.  This was the only time that the Rower led in the entire game as Mullinavat replied with a goal of their own within minutes.  The Rod Iron man started to exert themselves and with Ger Malone in good scoring form and the pace of Mark Mansfield was causing all sorts of problems for the Rower defence.  The Mullinavat lads led at half time on a score line of 1-11 to 1-5.
The second half started brightly for the Rower men and within a couple of minutes they had the ball in the Mullinavat net this followed by a point left just 3 points between the teams.  The introduction of the experienced Mossy Murphy paid dividends almost straight away for Mullinavat as Mossy found the net to leave the score Mullinavat 2-11 to Inistioge’s  2-6.  Inistioge got a point back through a free but this was to prove their last score and from there on Mullinavat turned the screw.  The Vat men scored 9 unanswered points between there and the finish to finish the game winners on a final score line Mullinavat 2-20 The Rower 2-7.
This was a very good start to the campaign and hopefully they will be able to keep up the good work when they play Ballinkillen in their next game on Friday 1st April.  Best for the winners were Darren Kenneally,Thomas Aylward,Liam Murphy,Paddy Raftice,Ger Malone,Joe Gahan and Mark Mansfield.  The team was as follows P Jones,D Aylward,J.P.Dungan,D Kenneally,T Aylward,K Aylward,L Murphy,P Raftice,J Wall,G Malone,B Kenneally,J Gahan,B Power,S Frisby,M Mansfield.  Subs used M Murphy,D Reid,P Mulhearn, S Ryan
